Vintage Robot applique for 7 year old

My godson birthday was coming near. It is on 10 December. I was extremely busy and exhausted travelling and tidy up the content of the website. It was the week where I slept practically 2-3 hours a day.

I realized that It is pretty tricky to give a present for 7 year old boy. He's probably no longer categorize as small children.

Recently, I am fascinated by Lilliput Robot which used to be manufactured in Japan. China has brought back the replica of this toy in the market again. And I just love the look. It is a bit retro, the past that determine to be in the future, the era where factory automation and the dreams of space travel existed.
Lilliput robot was ready for the adventure.

I, then, inspired to do applique of Robot on the t-shirt. You know, boys like to wear t-shirt everyday. I prefer something a little bit more personalized for any gifts, well I try. You know how much I hate buying something from famous shop, such as Toys'r'us, Disney shop, Mothercare etc. So, I bought the robot from the boutique in Cathay building where they sell vintage stuffs.

The picture above was at the beginning before I sew all the parts. Forgive the bad photo quality, I took it from the phone camera when I was rushing to travel to Batam.

I am unable to show the result because I was rushing even going to his birthday party. I did last minute sewing and ran to get a cab with the kids. It wasn't perfect at all. It was the first time I did applique on the t-shirt and yeah, it was challenging! T-shirt is not an easy material to work with.

Well, I just hope he likes it. But I love making it. it was a learning process.

I am going to start making another one for my son! :-)

Weekend night's dance session

Parenting changed everything. You see, we were not able to participate in "national dance party", ZoukOut 2011. It's difficult now to find time to show up on the "cool" dance floor where we used to be on Saturday night.

At least now, we are actively participating for jungle's dance on weekend's night.

It's Baloo's dance from Jungle Book!

....I believe it's much more healthier :-)

About the website of Petits Pois Children collection

Voila! Although I put 10% of the products in the website, I was happy announcing it on the 12 December 2011. It is only between friends, nothing big yet. But of course I am excited to launch 80% of the products end of January.

It was the first time that I do the commercial website without any help. Yes, thanks to Wix.com which I found when I was determined to do the website myself. I was frustrated asking friends or people around to help me. Ludo wanted to help me to get a pro website designer, but they are not enthusiastic with this project. They never call me to follow up whatsoever.

So, chosing and checking also making the website took 3 weeks. At first, I didn't quite know what I want for the look. I had to try to play around with other templates. The first two templates was not good enough, too overcrowded or too simple. But the third templates which is made for children shop e-commerce is perfect. Once I confirmed the look that I love, it took me 2 days to wrap it.

For the photography, I was asking my brother, Bayu to help me. He has a good camera that he got as a second hand and intent to re-sell it again. This powerful SLR camera can captures the good colour and lighting which make it more natural and beautiful. I was arranging and choreographing around too.

Most of the products are for baby such as blankets and bibs. So what I put in the website only the information of the products. I have not put any price yet which I will do it under the Shop department next month onwards. So, I just want to create The Look on the collection of Petits Pois by sowcasing the products to friends and people.

Some other photos are taken from Noelia's birthday party. I just love the way the kids' look when I snapped them in line. Some of them are with the grimace, the others are smiling and the rest is super cute.

More work to do!

The birth of Petits Pois children collection!

Voila, www.petitspoischildren.com

I was designing the website for about a week. This is the first time in my life that I did a website.

I was waiting actually, this professional guy that Ludo recommended me a few months ago. But he is just evaporate in to the sky, no news from him. Well, not even a single page he did to show me. I can't wait too long anymore. I have been hand-picking the fabrics, drawing the designs, dealing with the tailors and atelier, listing the budget, handling the pattern-makers, making some patterns, distributing to Europe and I am still a mother. So why not making a website myself? So, I did it. Yes, I did it with so much love.

And yes, our baby girl going to be 4.

Three weeks ago we started discussing who to invite for her birthday. We also discussed what birthday cake she prefers to have.

Last weekend, I cut the hard cardbox paper from Popular book store for $1.20. I asked Noe to draw the invitation cards on her own. She used a white pen to write on the photographs cost about $1.10.

I told her to close the eyes first and think about each person to invite. Put into drawings what she sees on the uniqueness of every individual. Voila!

Well, I am not trying to become another 'Martha Stewart" (eeww!), but we found it is important for a child to value each person and observe well the environment. It doesn't matter if the drawings are not perfect, but the thoughts that count. So whenever she sees imperfectness, she doesn't judge it too quickly.

We live in the world based on instant gratification. We always think that we can get whatever we want instantly. Kids need a bicycle we buy it, our kids feeling down and sad turn on the TV, they feel hungry there's always fast food restaurants. So I hope we are learning the process of everything.  It takes time to do create something beautiful, but it is not about the result. It is the process which includes deep thinking, skills, patients, perseverance etc.

So, we have 12 cards for the price of at least S$5.

The Wedding Lace 2004

I was running through all the photos of my past. I tried to save every copies in a secured place. The sweetest memory perhaps the Wedding. It is where our family and close friends made their time to attend the special day.

And yeah, I thought I have chosen a very good wedding gown. It looks like the one that Kate Middleton's wearing on her wedding. Well, it looks similar for the top part. What i love the most for my wedding gown is the soft lace all over on the outer part. I was really proud as THAT I designed it. I was sure that I didn't want to be seen so modern with tube dress style. I found the design I did it is pretty sophisticated. It still has Indonesian kebaya style but it also modern.

I would love to wear it again someday....hahaha, sure maybe for 20 years of marriage. I hope it doesn't need to alter a few parts on that dress just because I expand after 2 kids! :-)

I can only work with the music....and now, I can really see the design of the dress. Facebook Dilemma

I was pretty excited at the beginning when I found out about Facebook in 2009. When I lied awake, I would be stalking my friends, poking them, giving some comments or sending some greeting to friends and many more. I also developed the need to add more friends so my friends can see I am well-connected person. Well, 300 friends was my aim but now I've got more than that. I have approved 90% of friends requests. It's pretty daunting to know that I can be connected to people who just passing by from different parts of the world. I probably meet them one or two occasions ever in my life and hey, "We are Facebook friends!" The one that get me hooked all the time was the Cafe World game. After a couple months, I decided it was a waste of time. I still get many invites for this game.

These days Facebook's community is getting larger. Facebook is behemot. One of the largest, most all-encompassing sites online, Facebook is a virtual directory through which anyone with a computer can reach anyone else. It is by far the biggest social network on the planet, and that doesn't look to be changing any time soon. Most of the members are young adults from all over the world. Can you imagine? There are no boundaries at all! When there were big calamities, wars, accidents in small part of town somewhere in Timbuktu, you'll get the news within a split second (okay I am exaggerating it). The point is I know it before the news on the TV or radio. I am talking to the last details such as how many people injured, which part of the plane that got burned, how many people is suffering etc.

A couple of days ago, I read the article on how the Egypt revolution get started. And you can guess what is the tool the youth of Egypt used it? Facebook. They planned it carefully and connect their ideas using Facebook (Zuckerberg, your idea rocks the world). Because it is so powerful, The government shut down the internet for the whole country. But it was too late, their heart and mind had burned with the desire to toppled down the government.

Right now, I am on the edge of leaving this tool. There are lotsa reason behind it. Firstly, I became hooked of "showcasing what I have" to people in my friends' list. And I believe, that is one of the purpose of Facebook-ing. I always think getting the latest, the biggest, the most expensive stuffs are need to be reported. Okay, not only that I started to picture what the happy-me should look like on the photos.

Secondly, sometimes I neglected a good quality time with my daughter and my son these days. Although I found that it was a medicine to my boredom and loneliness after I gave birth to my son. I just can stand to sit for a long period of time breastfeeding my son for 10 times a day. I needed the latest update from my friends to keep sane. But I've spending too much already and sometimes I don't know what status I should post. Furthermore, I don't like if my daughter tell me to stop Facebook-ing cos she wants bed-time reading. It will happen someday. Spending so much time on the computer is encouraging the children to do the same thing like you. So, they think it is normal to ignore quality time with the family someday.

Thirdly, Privacy loss risks. I've shared everything to friends about almost anything. Sharing too much information can lead to identity theft, professional issues and relationship problems etc. And yes, talking about relationship problem I was amazed why people asking me whether I am 'Married" or having "Complicated", or "Engaged", "Single" etc on my marital status. I changed the choices every 2 months just because I think it is fun. I think, why would I want to post too much facts in this social network media? I prefer to create different identity in so-not-real-world. They asked me whether I have a problem with my husband for not stating that I am "married". So, for the well-being of everybody I now put that I am Married.

A couple of hours ago, I decided to block a couple of persons in my friends' list. I felt guilty after that but I overcame it by convincing myself this is not real relationship. And heck, I can use my rights to block anybody who I feel it is useless or never meet in person in the past 2 years. Unfortunately, one of the person I blocked is a wife of a friend who complained and sound a bit depressive in everywhere she went in this country. Oohh, God bless her soul and her family! She bragged about the imperfect world she is living. I just hope she can get a life :-). What a pain to read her sadness.
The rest of the friends I blocked today, they just don't create any impact in my life whatsoever. Never meet them before, or I am not going to have anything with their life. If I see friends with their whinning status all the time, I usually get them blocked. I can't stand to hear the negativities about a lot of thing when I know they are blessed to live in this world.

Facebook can also be rather irritating. I am constantly getting friend requests, messages, pokes, like, photos, game requests, application notifications, etc. This will never end. I got tagged too many photos of the products from a few online shops. And sometimes, the latest news are the new products launching. What a pain to see these.

The decision to leave Facebook may depend on how my project going to be in the next few months. I wouldn't have time to keep stalking to my friends' life. But who knows, I will probably use it for marketing tools ;-) It's fair, non?!

Taking a break in the kitchen

Oh, I've just closed the door of the kids room. Raffael went to sleep at 7 pm and Noelia is starting to sleep around 8.30 pm. So, I have just half and hour before I pick the package that Ludo's parent sent at Lalitha's house.

We've been travelling quite a bit this month. It was a good few weeks in Bali, and another few days in Jakarta during the Hari Raya Ied. Yes, it is a holiday and work at the same time. Most of the workshop for the products I am going to launch are in Bali and Jakarta.

I came back home yesterday night, I was happy to find my room and the house. This morning I decided to do strawberry and Banana jam. And I looovvee the smell of the sweet strawberry cooked on the stove. Yes, I need that break! Cooking is de-stressing for me. It's been a long time i did not manage to let my hands get dirty in the kitchen. I've been concentrating so much on doing paper works, specs sheets, calls etc all this time.

Now, I just need to stock-up my jams! I love preserving my favourite fruits.

Well tomorrow, I am planning to buy a couple of flower pots for our little garden!

Lilies of the Field by a Pullitzer Prize, Anna Quindlen

I am inspired this week by this commencement speech by Anna Quindlen at Villanove University.

She teaches me how to find humility in all the things that we do, as a wife, a parent, a friend, a daughter, a sister and a granddaughter.
We need to be bold in action, have a courage to cross the sea, and instant gratification is never in our life.
The world is not all about me but about everything and everyone.

-----

By Anna Quindlen

I'm a novelist. My work is human nature. Real life is all I know. Don't ever confuse the two, your life and your work.

You will walk out of here this afternoon with only one thing that no one else has. There will be hundreds of people out there with your same degree; there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a living. But you will be the only person alive who has sole custody of your life.

Your particular life. Your entire life. Not just your life at a desk, or your life on a bus, or in a car, or at the computer. Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart. Not just your bank account but your soul.

People don't talk about the soul very much anymore. It's so much easier to write a resume than to craft a spirit. But a resume is a cold comfort on a winter night, or when you're sad, or broke, or lonely, or when you've gotten back the test results and they're not so good.

Here is my resume: I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent. I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows mean what they say.

I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today, because I would be a cardboard cutout. But I call them on the phone, and I meet them for lunch. I would be rotten, or at best mediocre at my job, if those other things were not true. You cannot be really first rate at your work if your work is all you are.

So here's what I wanted to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a manic pursuit of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house.

Do you think you'd care so very much about those things if you blew an aneurysm one afternoon, or found a lump in your breast? Get a life in which you notice the smell of salt water pushing itself on a breeze over Seaside Heights, a life in which you stop and watch how a red tailed hawk circles over the water or the way a baby scowls with concentration when she tries to pick up a Cheerio with her thumb and first finger. Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter.

Get a life in which you are generous. And realize that life is the best thing ever, and that you have no business taking it for granted. Care so deeply about its goodness that you want to spread it around. Take money you would have spent on beers and give it to charity. Work in a soup kitchen. Be a big brother or sister.

All of you want to do well. But if you do not do good too, then doing well will never be enough.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, our minutes. It is so easy to take for granted the color of our kids' eyes, the way the melody in a symphony rises and falls and disappears and rises again.

It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned that it is not a dress rehearsal, and that today is the only guarantee you get.

I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and utterly. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned. By telling them this:

Consider the lilies of the field. Look at the fuzz on a baby's ear. Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a terminal illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived.

The Lesson of Beauty

When it comes to beauty, we need to "think French", they said.

I heard, French women in the 1940 were the most fashionable people on earth. The city of light is famous with remarkable French lace, women's hat, and good quality fabrics. French or European had the image of haute couture.

But look at them now, they embraced natural beauty. Of course, it is easy to look natural when the skins are great. It probably one of the French secret. Gone is the day where woman put thick make-up and neatly combed hair to go outside.

The women I know from my husband's family never seem to use any foundation for everyday use. But for occasional events for party or dinner they use a little foundation which need to be blend really well, a little color on the eyelids, mascara, natural color lipstick and a light blush-on. And they prefer to chose the dress which are not too catchy but great tailor-made and fabrics.

I confessed the more I spent sometime with the French femmes, the more I realized I don't have to spend inordinate amount of time grooming any usual American women do (i know that from reality US TV). Most let their hair air dry, wear little make-up, and skimp for hair removal. And I tell ya, most French men don't really care about bikini wax. The more you spend less on the prep time, the happier French man (real life: husband) because he can smell the real "me" not the deodorant or shampoo. I swear sometimes the appreciative comment he made made me want to sprint to shower. Fact: They prefer lacey (not push-up bra from Wacoal or Triumph) bra. Errrr, have you seen Charlotte Gainsbourg's dress when she is heavily pregnant in Cannes 2011?

Recently, I discovered French beauty, Charlotte Gainsbourg. She's a model, an artist, also a singer. I used to wonder what's a big deal with her beauty. Far glitzy from Hollywood stars, Charlotte is a natural beauty that possesses the kind of ease and elegance that is only possible of someone that is extremely comfortable in their own skin. She is boyish and yet so feminine at the same time (this is very hard to pull off, trust me). She looks just as chic in a pair of jeans and cowboy boots. Often wearing little to no makeup, it's not that she doesn't care about her appearance, it's that she is that confident. Beauty is effortless for her.

And then, my favourite French actress is Marion Cotillard. I am convinced that French women born with some "chic gene". As usual, they look impeccable without an ounce of effort. And even two weeks after she gave birth. Not only she is an artist, but she does environment activities. She is also active in GreenPeace organisation.

I have noticed there are many women in Asia thinking about their beauty above everything else. I see 16 year old girls wear fake eyelashes and using thick make-up. They look so fake, now they look like Lady Gaga drag version. The thing is, I never subscribed to Kim Kardashian's look (which I know lotsa women in Indonesia loves her look). Fine, she's a celebrity wearing a tight-dress for almost every occasion even picking up the groceries. Many of us strives for American ideal of beauty walking around with the same manner of Kardashian but it doesn't help them at all judging from their look. They end up looking artificial, generic, and a bit "barbie", or worse "aging Barbie". American beauty is polished, from hair to toes.

Oh crap, Monica Belucci.
Sans make-up you are still look like a goddess. What's wrong with her gene?

These are outstanding women on European beauty magazines cover without make-up and photoshop. Amazing!

Perhaps those in the industry are so tired of seeing perfection, that they crave what’s natural, imperfect, and unique. I can relate. I live in Asia for along time, sometimes I crave a bit of the weather that is cold, gloomy or snowy. It’s a bit ironic because isn’t it the fashion and beauty industry that has created this deep longing in women for perfect, ideal beauty.

Are they all au naturel? If we are able to look at their closet (which is pretty impolite sometimes), it is full of beauty products from the hair to nails. They actually spend on serums, conditioners and good shampoo, good quality night and eye creams, also the most important is Day cream with the SPF. French women spend more to look natural, I think. Look at Carla Bruni now, she has done Botox. The difference is the do it in a subtle natural way without the eyebrows being "jacked to Jesus".

Furthermore into the reality, some women in France turn to dermatologists for their skincare, and their visits are likely to be covered by health insurance (woott wottt, i better pack my bags and move to Paris). Yet even the generous French system doesn’t pay for botox, collagen or hyaluronic acid injections (Restylane), nor for “lifting” or most other cosmetic surgery. But that doesn’t stop French women from having something done.

The objective of plastic surgery in France, according to Dr Michel Soussaline, a Paris surgeon with more than 30 years’ experience, is “to keep the natural beauty and charm of each individual woman, not to fit some current ideal of beauty”. In the United States, he says, women who spend a lot of money on facelifts want to show off their investment.

Of course, I was not raised in European family nor American. I wouldn't say either that I am completely Westernized and I did not raise in the strict Asian upbringing. I do not see this just because I am married to French man (but somehow it does a little effect).I am exposed to different kind of beauty from the TV (mostly Hollywood), Internet, magazines and reality, even my upbringing. I would like to learn how to attain the inner beauty into my womanhood. I would like to explore the natural beauty of who I am, embrace the differences and seriously still feminine. In this perspective, French beauty teaches me to unlearn the rulebook of my adolescence.

Polaroid our life!

Rhhhaaa!!! Bought the mini Fuji Polaroid camera a few months back. And I like it! It is instant and the print-out colour is not too bad.

I did a bit of research on buying the real Polaroid cameras which are almost rare to see these days. I decided to buy Mini Fuji Film Instant camera which produce similar polaroid photos but in name card size. It is because I think I can get the film easily in any Fuji Film store island wide. But I was a bit upset because I was expecting usual size polaroid film.
I try to sell them on Ebay but I set the price higher just because I want to let go but still having fun with it.

I was in doubt to get real vintage Polaroid because the company has ceased the production of the film due to digital camera which mushroom-ing around the world. I can be sure 14 year old kids can shoot better with SLR camera which they get from their birthday present. I don't have good quality SLR camera yet, it's pretty expensive comparing what I have. A usual Canon D10.

The Polaroid company, which will concentrate on digital cameras and printers has filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and was acquired by a private investment company in 2005. But I do love their cheap looking quality of film.

During my visit in Jakarta last April, I went to Brightspot Market in Pacific Plaza. It is a place where we can find any artsy, unique and fun stuffs made in Indonesia or young creative people.

Walk in the park

Walk in the park, originally uploaded by L'Aubergine Grillée.

....Sometimes all we need is the walk in the park.
I am overloaded with plans, projects, parenting duty and my own personal goals. We will be leaving this Saturday (finally) to Jakarta to focus on the project. But I am not too sure how much I can do when the family is around....plus, I have old friends from Primary School to catch up. The kids will be around me to distract my attention here and there...so yeah, I am worry.
There's so many thing on my mind to finish this big task.

But I am gonna walk in the park...regardless...I need inspiration. The green grass and trees are my drugs.

Noelia's room

, originally uploaded by L'Aubergine Grillée.

It grows with her.
It takes time to design her room because I am not a fan of pink girly princessy room. So I collected precious pieces or vintage children's stuffs from travelling or friends' presents to decorate her room.

I prefer handmade pieces, something to encourage creative ideas...and some IKEA's product just do good enough.

I miss sewing days.

So, I watched my son growing and think he should like the tags blankie. You know, baby loves holding the tags with different textures and colours. But to give a little extra for fun, I inserted plastic bag in the blankie. I noticed that he doesn't really play with the toys, he loves to chew on plastic bags. I figured that he must've loved the sound.

There he is, keep on chewing and pulling the tags. Voila!

5.5 months

He'll turn 6 months in a week! I haven't start solid yet. But he showed so much interest with things we put inside our mouth.
So I give him a carrot stick to chew which only last a few minutes before he let it go. A few days ago we tried a table spoon of brown rice cereal with breastmilk. He cleaned the bowl!

I am trying to go slow in this matter due to food allergy he may have in the future. Once I read a research in the newspaper that starting solid before 6 months may develop food allergy in child.

Alright, it means that he gotta wait a bit..another 1 more week and we'll do slow on cereal for him.

Baby Skincare Products, Are they safe?

These days, walking down the aisle of huge supermarket could be a daunting experience which sometimes we often have a vague idea of what items good and needed for us. We see most of the products for baby that we find in the counter claim to be "safe" and"gentle". Advertisements of the baby and health care products traditionally highlight the "soft", "pure" and "safe" qualities so it is sound logical for consumers to trust the products for the baby delicate skin. I think the most effective advertising ever will be in the hospitals for new parents with goodie bags of baby products.

Recently, I was invited for breakfast session at my friend's house with some other ladies in Pasir Ris for a discussion about "How to read the labels of most of the products". This session is facilitated by Delphinia Tam who created the baby products from ONLY natural ingredients which do not harm the delicate skin of the baby. She has two kids which one of them had suffered eczhema. The name of the baby products is "Four Cow Farm". I did not know about this until my friend gave me a present for my second newborn a month ago. I have been carrying around their Calendula Cream everywhere even to hot and humid Bali about 2 weeks ago to help reducing heat rash on Raffael skin.
The study done by The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics discovered that most of children's hair care and bath products contain cancer-causing chemicals, specifically formaldehyde and dioxane.

After my first child was born and admitted in the ICU since day one for 2 months, I asked myself what can I do to ensure I am providing her healthy and good environment. I didn't trust most of the brands offered for baby. I personally subscribe the blog Healthy Child, which update me with the latest information about harmful chemicals and suggesting a good lifestyle for the family. My feelings just right, after careful research I've done the outstanding brand which most people trusted such Johnsons & Johnsons is no longer safe. By the way, my paeditrician recommended me not to use J&J lotion brand for my son.

I have been using mostly organic products of baby shampoo, lotion and gel for my kids because I thought it is common sense these days to switch into something better. But I have no idea that what is appear "organic" for a product may not processed organically nor even certified by the Environment Agency. So, I made a lot of research about this.

For this particular session I attended to, I learned to read the labels right. Why do we need to do it? Do I sound paranoid about this? Maybe I do. It is because recently there are more "convincing" products out in the market using dangerous chemicals although it is small amount but they are used for everyday life. I realized that on having healthy family the responsibility will be depending on the mothers. By being informed and educated on what the products to consume we contribute to the health of our loved ones.

Delphinia Tam managed to guide us on how it is important to understand the ingredients of the baby skincare products. Most of the ingredients contains mineral oil or petroleum derivatives, i.e from crude oil, Petrolatum a.k.a Petroleum Jelly, Propylene Glycol and PEG (Polyethylene Glycol). It is because they are cheap to use and can last pretty much forever on the shelf. Of course, they will also contain strong preservatives to extend a product's shelf life. Parabens (such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben and propylparaben) are preservatives linked to tumours in the breast and skin.

I personally love to smell baby after bath and slathered with soft perfumed lotion. But No! Most of the lotions with fragrance are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum!

From my findings, there are some less toxic alternatives for lotion:
  • Aloe Vera Gel - food grade (Lily of the Desert)
  • Vitamin E oil - food grade
  • Olive Oil (organic is best)
  • Lanolin cream (organic only). Note: Lanolin is derived from sheep and is a common allergen.
If we are ever going to need to use the baby oil, I learned that the best oil is the olive oil or sesame oil that we can find in kitchen counter. The good brand and package of baby oil from the famous brand had been gone process which may be harmful for the skin. If it is good and clean to eat, it must be good for the skin too.

Therefore, I have gathered some infos about the harmful ingredients which we can look out everytime we purchase the products;
  • Parabens: It is used as preservatives in many baby products, including lotions, baby washes, wipes and other products for children. It can cause allergic reactions, skin and eyes irritations. Beside it can cause cancer, it also have been shown to harm human sperm. There are several specific parabens such as Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, butylparaben and others. It can be found in so many products, children can be exposed to it repeatedly everyday.
  • Formaldehyde: It is used in at least one baby wash product. It is a probable human carcinogen which associated with gene damage, mutations and developmental problems
  • Benzhetonium Chloride: It is used in some baby wipes and it is highly toxic. Ingesting even a small amount may cause vomiting, collapse, convulsions, coma or death
  • Benzyl Alcohol: It is found in some baby lotions and diaper rash treatments. It is a moderate skin and eye irritant, and larger exposures can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress and even death
  • Triethanolamine and Cocamide DEA: It is found in some shampoo and lotions. Cocamide is used in some bubble baths. If mixed with nitrosating agents, it can become carcinogenic. Both are irritants, and Triethanolamine can cause dermatitis.
  • Polyethylene Glycols: It is found in cleaning products and lotions. It should not be used on damaged skin due to concerns over kidney toxicity.
  • Isopropanol: It is found in at least one shampoo. It can cause dizziness, loss of cordination, headache, confusion etc.
  • Phenoxyethanol: It is found in some baby cleansing cloth. It can cause central nervous depression: nausea, vomiting and sometimes diarrhea, headache or other pain.
  • Sulfates: This is including Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate which can be found in any shampoo, lotions, cream bath etc. It can cause irritations and it is linked to eye/corneal damage
Darn, I feel that I re-learn the chemistry back again. This reality is not fair, but it is reality. It is the job of the parents to be educated and informed about it.

OUR VIRTUAL INSANITY ... DOES TECHNOLOGY BRINGS HAPPINESS?

For those who suffers O.C.D = Online Compulsive Disorder

and us who keep checking emails every 10 minutes in the toilet, in the restaurants, in our kids end of the year concert and before we go to bed.

"Futures made of virtual insanity

now always seem, to be governed by this love we have

For useless, twisting of our then new technology

Oh now there is no sound for we all live underground

~ Jamiroquai

I love the song...and I love it being the hit in 1999, I think. Well this is before we wi-fi(ed) the (whole) world and Blackberry or IPhone arrived.

I am not a gadget person who responds and follow the instruction of computer-TV for yoga exercises, playing tennis or rafting.....

If you don't have a TV, no cellphone, no high speed Internet access at home, don't write emails, are not on Facebook, not on MySpace, and don't know what Twitter is... - Gee, what century do you life in? Do you actually exist?

Many of us equate technology with progress, improvement, and an increase of happiness. Even if the actual value of a gadget in terms of progress is not clear, they are often a source of novelty, and novelty - in technology, as much as in art, entertainment, science, or your peer group's gossip - can be pretty much addictive. For these reasons, technological developments are mostly considered positive changes, which in turn leads us to push forward these changes and incorporate them rapidly into our daily lifes.

But it must not necessarily be the case that these changes are good and lead to increased happiness. It needs time for us to judge on the advantages and drawbacks of changes. Dealing with unwanted side-effects is not an easy task, not one that takes place automatically, and not one that an invisible hand guides; it requires care, thought, and political institutions that ensure happiness is sustainable even on the expenses of dopamine-kicks. Instead of 'Can Technology make us Happy?', the question we should then actually ask is

If technology makes us unhappy, will we be able to realize and correct our mistakes in a timely manner?

Gratin Dauphinois of my mom-in-law's style

Gratin Dauphinois, originally uploaded by L'Aubergine Grillée.

Among other things I learned when I was going to get married with this French man is cooking Gratin Dauphinois with my mother in law in Paris. It is like a 'French food boot-camp' for me. Oh wait, "French culture boot-camp". She or perhaps Ludo who called her to give me a short course on cooking his favourite mom's foods. I know, I should've known this coming from him. At the end of my stay in France after our wedding, I've got a folder of recipe of her son favourite food!!! That's the role of the French mom, making sure the son is eating well in this tiny Asian country with surrounded by oriental cuisines. Oh well.

Before I know him I did not have a clue about European foods beside eating out in the restaurants which claim French cuisine in Singapore. I suppose it is DeliFrance :-), affordable food closer to French. Or maybe when I visit Paris for work.

When I saw the potatoes were almost gone bad in the kitchen, I would love to quickly turn it into something 'homey' which most of the ingredients are pretty basic in our fridge. This Gratin which means a top crust consists of crumbs from cheese and butter is a homey food for most French. It is classic and warm. On Gratin Dauphinois, she advised me to put the thin sliced potatoes neatly so it will be nice to see as well as eating it. Since my 'short course on French cuisine' with his mom, I started to appreciate alot from it. Because it is fast and simple compare to so many steps and ingredients of Asian cuisine, and it tastes good.

Talking about making homemade foods, we are trying to teach the kids to learn to love eating-in. In Asia especially in Singapore, the food stalls are everywhere and they are pretty clean and affordable. Some of them are good. But the idea is to make the children appreciate good nutritious foods prepared at home and sitting with the family to enjoy the food. In this age, every foods prepared really fast as there is no time for us to even prepare them in the kitchen. It comes in the easy to carry package, of course with lotsa chemicals and preservatives. If not, they would not have long shelf-life.

Having quality time together during dinner, It is something that I was lacking off when I was young because we ate in front of the TV to entertain us.

So now, we turn off the TV and We prepare the foods together and sit to eat with family.

Hopefully someday I can teach the kids to cook good food which I believe it is one of the quality time with the family.

The shops were closed during the Chinese New Year. Everybody did a groceries a day before to prepare for the celebration. And I was craving for something sweet. And we bought sooo many carrots lately because those are one of the vegetable we love for snack, stir-fry, salads, soups etc. But I was getting sick of snacking the fresh cut carrots, that explained because I am not French. But Noelia, she looooooovvveeess it for snack like the father.

So I thought, there must be something more from carrots than usual carrotes rapees or snack. There, I found it could also be a dessert. How versatile! However, I am not usually fond of cupcakes. MISFORTUNE EVENT ON THE CLOUDY WEEKEND

Oh Well,

Yesterday evening after Ludo called me as he is in KL for business meeting, he texted me to say that he lost the bag with all important documents. He recalled there was a guy sat next to him and apparently changed his bag to another black bag. The worse part is his passport and laptop were inside his bag. That guy hit the jackpot or maybe not....I don't know. Although it is a second hand laptop, but I am sure it contains lotsa important data.

It reminded me when i was in Paris. I was with 15 months old Noelia in the big mall in the suburbs, my mom in law dropped us off there so we can shop around and I was carrying about 500 euro in the bag. It was a big Longchamp bag I bought not long ago, it was gone forever including everything inside. Well, lucky there wasn't any passport but hey, I was really extremely sad about the money, Singapore and Indonesian ID cards, books, my quite brand new bag, and my handphone.

I was obliged to call Ludo in Singapore to get his mom to call me in the mall. I asked around the mall to people if I can borrow their phone to call Singapore and will pay them as soon as Sylvie (mom-in-law) pick me up. I was shivering and worried because Noelia was with me the whole tragedy, but she fell asleep. She woke up when Sylvie managed to pick me up. What a luck!
Hey, now we are even....they stole my bag and your bag, Ludo! But hope you can get your passport to return to Singapore!

Langkawi, December 2010

The parents-in-law arrived. And we were taking them to Langkawi, an island in Malaysia, an hour 30 minutes by AirAsia from Singapore. It is relatively small island where you can drive from coast to coast for 30-40 minutes.

To be honest, I wasn't really thrilled to go there but I found the island is not too bad. I have been there once for a wedding of our friend when I was 5 months pregnant of Noelia. The wedding venue was in Frangipani resort, it is a beautiful wedding facing the sea. The beach is within walk.

I will start with the positive note. The island is pleasant and relatively clean (living in Singapore, we can compare the cleanliness of a city now). The inhabitants are really friendly and simple.

The first few days, we stayed in The Andaman Hotel. We rented the car with reasonable price to drive around the island with the family. A 8 seater Avanza car we rented per day cost about S$40. It is pretty convenient if we really want to venture out rather than enjoying hotel facilities only. The Andaman is a huge hotel but we do not feel that way due to the tropical setting of the vegetation around the building. This hotel is pretty much good for family visitors with huge kids club and interesting shape of swimming pools for adults and children. Be careful not to open the windows of the room for too long because the monkeys will sneak-in to look for the foods in our bags. But having the monkeys roam around the resort added another excitement for the kids and adults. There are different types of monkey roam around the island.

Down below is the catamaran to catch the beautiful sunrise or sunset. You can request the reception if you prefer to ride this baby with family or people you love to enjoy the scenery with the glass of champagne.

The room is big and they can provide the baby cot. So, loving it! It is easy to travel with the facilities like that.

The second day, we drove to Langkawi Bird Park. It has pretty decent building and not only varieties of birds around the island but also some reptiles, and game animals. Of course, it is interesting for a toddler like Noe who is allowed to feed the animals from the special package foods we bought at the entrance. Even we found it amusing to be able to feed the flock of birds in the big cage, or the rabbits, and the baby goats who aggressively climbing up our t-shirt to reach the vegetables in our hands.

After a few days at The Andaman, we stayed in Bon Ton Resort. A small boutique resort belong to Australian lady. The highlight of this resort is the traditional Malay House who look like a stage house with its stylish and unique interior design. It's suprisingly family-friendly resort. We had a baby cot and additional bed for Noelia. We found this small resort is quite charming and the staffs are helpful. The only downside of the resort is the breakfast time, they will put our breakfast in the fridge of every room the night before. So we can wake up anytime and serve our own fruits, bread, cakes and coffee/teas. In every room, there are coffee makers, electric kettle and different teas/coffees. We must say the cakes are excellent! We love it.

The restaurant serves good food and apparently it is famous around the island for bohemian chic tourists. The rooms are in 8 Malay timber houses which each of them has its own cat. The owner of the resort is an animal lover. She also set-up Animal Protection shelter for dogs and cats, but some of them left roaming around the resort.

They provide some pool toys for the young ones. Most of the guests are the savvy travellers from different countries who stay more than a 4 days.

The second day we stayed in Bon Ton we were ready to venture out in the villages near by. We walked more than 2 hours passing by paddy fields, houses, and water buffalos. Four adults, a toddler and a baby were on adventures on a hot morning until 1 pm. After collecting the wild flowers for a bouquet, Noe was too tired to walk so we need Grandpere's shoulder to carry her on his back. She fell asleep soon after. Raffael was really patient though he cried of his fatigue at the beginning, he too surrendered to his tired body.

After the nap for the little ones, we headed for lunch and swimming.

Have you seen the stylish bathtub?

Voila! Our stay in Bon Ton resort, Langkawi is pretty good. I love the stylish colour of every corners and details. And most of all, it is family friendly resort where the kids can also have fun watching videos (they have tremendous collection of DVD movies), read the books, swimming or playing with cats around.

The parents-in-law, Ludo and Noelia went for another adventure the next day to visit 3-4 islands by boat. One of them is The Pregnant Maiden's island. The tour guy picked them up at around 11 am and they were back at 3 pm. Me and Raffael were staying at the resort because we are advised not to go in the boat as it is too windy for a small baby. According to Ludo, the driver of the boat went too fast and Noe was a little bit worried. They advised the driver not to go too fast but he ignored them because he used to it with the tempo and there hasn't been any problem with it. Well, apparently they are not really impressed with the islands crowded with local tourists at its beach as it was school holiday period.

We checked out early morning at 8 am as Air Asia for Singapore departs at 8.55 am. Unfortunately, no one was there to help us with the baggages. The staffs are usually come after 9 am. That is another downside of this resort. We have paid the bills the night before but no service in the morning to help us load our baggages in the car, nor saying goodbye or greets from them. I think we pretty much expecting them saying personally 'hope the stay has been enjoyable for you' as we regard this resort like a guest house.

But we packed all GOOD breakfasts (Bonne Maman's jam, organic orange juices, good breads and chocolate cakes) in a bag and hopped into the car with the luggages to the airport.

USEFUL INFO

CAR RENTAL:
The most convenient to rent a car is to book it a head of the time and have it waiting for you. That has the advantage that you can ask them to give you a full tank and that you will return the car with a full tank. Otherwise, you can fill up a tank easily in any petrol station around the island.

Why rent a car in Langkawi?
1. Drive down to Tanjong Rhu, a scenic beach, for a quiet time picking seashells.
2. Visit the 'roaming' night market (check with your hotel for location).
3. Make your way to restaurants.
4. Save on taxi fares.
5. Drive along the coastal areas.
6. Drive to the cable car base station.

The List of car rental:

1. Kasina Car Rental

3. Any Car Rental agent at the airport. Bargain with them the price. Mark all the scratches and fuel level.

ACTIVITIES

Off course, the obvious activities are beach, swimming and sea sport activities. The children can easily do most of these in the hotel. I would say that Langkawi is not an interesting place to discover much. It's a small island and the inhabitants speak mostly Malay with a little bit of English. Langkawi can only offer the best natural sites for its visitors.
Although the local government has made a major effort to promote Langkawi’s many colourful legends associated with natural sites, which add dimension to the island. But I found it is not enough as to compare to Bali or Jogjakarta (Even I am Indonesian, it is interesting to discover my own country).

Check out down below which I think it is pretty okay for the family to visit:

1. Crocodile Farm
There are over 1,000 species of alligators and crocodiles on site, kids can have a safe but intimate experience with these
ancient and deadly creatures. The exhibition centre provides detailed displays of every aspect of a crocodile's life.

2. Underwater World Langkawi
Underwater World is the island's most popular attraction for the families. There are 100 tanks on site, including an amazing
walkthrough Plexiglas tunnel where visitors are surrounded by sharks, sea turtles and manta rays.

3. Langkawi Bird Paradise
Open daily : 9 am - 9.30 pm
Its worth to visit with the children and don't forget to buy the foods at the entrance.

4. Monkey
Everywhere along the road and some at the resorts

5. Waterfall
Temurun Waterfall is within walking distance.

6. Spa
Not my favourite activities in Malaysia because it is not as good as in Indonesia or Thailand. The pressure is much softer and it is not my style. But try the one in ALUN-ALUN SPA.

7. Shopping
Kuah Town area. Check out the NIGHT MARKET too, they are worth to visit.
